What Is the Mazor X Stealth?

Mazor X Stealth is an FDA-approved robotic technology that allows surgeons to perform very precise spine procedures using several small incisions instead of making a massive cut typical of traditional surgery. This technology can convert 2D images taken from its C-arms into 3D images. The resulting high-contrast images may allow surgeons to see the surgical site more clearly. This robotic technology also helps surgeons know the location of their tools inside the body by tracking them in relation to the patient’s anatomy.

However, not all patients are a candidate for Mazor robot surgery. A thorough medical evaluation must be done first before your healthcare team recommends whether a minimally invasive surgery may be appropriate for you or other treatment options must be tried first before surgery may be considered.

How Does Robotic Spine Surgery Work?

The Mazor spine robot cannot operate independently, so rest assured a surgeon always operates the system hands-on throughout your surgery. Typically, there are four steps in a Mazor X surgery. First, the surgeon creates a customized and detailed surgical plan for each patient using Mazor X’s software. Next, Mazor X’s robotic arms will be secured to the patient’s surgical site through a mounting system, which will be synchronized with the surgical blueprint for 3D syncing. After this, Mazor X guides the surgical implants and tools according to the plan.

Before your surgery, your doctor will provide personalized instructions about how you can prepare for your procedure. The details depend on your condition, current health status, results from medical examinations and other factors. We encourage you to ask questions about your planned procedure as we walk you through what to expect before, during and after surgery. You will be given anesthesia before the procedure so you are asleep throughout your surgery. Because traditional or open surgery may require larger incisions through skin or tissue, wounds from it may take longer to heal than incisions from a minimally invasive procedure. Open surgery may require a patient to stay in the hospital for several days for observation. Recovery time can extend to several months 

On the other hand, surgery done with a minimally invasive technology like Mazor X may shorten recovery time for patients. It is also associated with increased surgical accuracy, reduced pain and lessened risk of complications. As such, Mazor X patients may be able to return to their daily activities quicker compared to if they had open surgery.
