What is General Surgery?
General surgery is a medical specialty focused on diagnosing, treating and managing conditions that affect key areas of the body, including the digestive tract, abdomen, breast, skin, soft tissue, endocrine system, head, neck and vascular system. It involves comprehensive training across these areas, covering all stages of surgical care, from evaluation and surgery to recovery and complication management.
What Surgeries Do General Surgeons Do?
General surgeons are trained to diagnose and treat conditions that may require surgery. They perform operations, manage complications, and provide follow-up care. Their scope of work includes supporting patients with injuries, certain cancers or health problems involving the digestive system, endocrine organs, or soft tissues. General surgeons also coordinate care with other specialists when needed and are often involved in emergency and trauma situations.
General surgery services include treatment and surgical care in areas such as:
- The abdomen and digestive tract
- The breast, skin and soft tissue
- The head and neck, including certain glands and skin-related conditions
- Blood vessels, excluding those in the brain and heart
- The endocrine system, such as the thyroid, adrenal glands and pancreas
It also involves support for patients with cancer, traumatic injuries or critical illness, including care in emergency rooms, ICUs and trauma or burn units. Training in general surgery includes experience in endoscopy, emergency care and intensive care settings.
General Surgical Procedures at Saint Francis Healthcare
Several of our surgeons have received additional training in robotic surgery using the da Vinci robot. This technology allows improved precision and precise visualization in surgery to remove the gallbladder. Some patients may be candidates for gallbladder removal using only a single small incision in the belly button. This technique may result in less pain and an improved cosmetic result. In the near future we plan to expand the use of this technology to include surgery for reflux, hernia and intestine.
Colorectal surgery involves treatment of especially difficult problems and diseases of the lower digestive tract which are best managed by surgeons with advanced, fellowship training in this surgical subspecialty.
Oncologic surgery involves itself with the management of tumors and cancers that require surgery for effective treatment and cure. Several of our doctors have advanced training in oncologic surgery which provides them with special skills in the treatment of these problems.
Endocrine surgery includes problems of the pancreas, thyroid, parathyroid and adrenal glands. Several surgeons in our group have expertise and extensive experience in treating these disorders. Patients with endocrine and pancreatic problems can be directed to physicians who have special interests in and experience with this area of surgery.
Vascular surgery is the repair of blocked, enlarged or otherwise diseased or damaged blood vessels, aneurysms of the aorta as well as blockages of the arteries in the neck, abdomen or legs are examples. In addition, our physicians supervise the Noninvasive Vascular Laboratory at Saint Francis Hospital. The purpose of this facility is to diagnose partial or complete arterial blockages and other vascular problems without the use of needles or the injection of dye.
