Cirugía ginecológica
Advanced Gynecologic Surgery for the Women of Memphis and Bartlett
Each year, women are faced with a number of gynecologic conditions — such as endometriosis, uterine fibroids and pelvic floor prolapse — that may require surgery. In the past, traditional open-incision surgery was the only option, and the resulting pain and scarring made recovery lengthy and difficult.
Today, at Saint Francis Healthcare, we can treat many conditions with minimally invasive robotic surgery using the da Vinci® Surgical System. The system’s robotic arms are controlled by a surgeon, enabling greater visualization, dexterity and precision. This process results in less scarring and pain, and in some cases, it can even preserve the uterus in procedures where that was not possible before.
At Saint Francis Healthcare, you can expect:
- A team of dedicated gynecologists, nurses and other women’s health caregivers, providing you with surgical care in a compassionate and patient-centered environment
- Advanced, minimally invasive surgery options for a range of procedures, including hysterectomy, uterine fibroid removal and more
- Offering da Vinci® robotic-assisted surgery results in less pain, less scarring and a shorter recovery time
What Is a Gynecologic Robotic Surgery?
The female reproductive system is a delicate and complex system, which may consist of the uterus, ovaries, fallopian tubes, cervix and vagina. Gynecologic disorders can affect many aspects of a woman's life, including fertility problems. When lifestyle changes combined with medications do not work, surgery may be recommended to diagnose and treat the source of the symptoms.
Unlike traditional open surgery, surgeons perform robotic, minimally invasive procedures through a console located in the operating theatre that has flexible robotic arms that mirror their hand movements to complete an operation. The robotic arms hold a special camera as well as the surgical equipment. By using the cameras and robotic arms controlled by a skilled physician, your operating team can effectively facilitate the separation of tissue, nerves and blood vessels in deep and narrow spaces that may be needed.
For qualified candidates, gynecologic robotic surgery may offer numerous potential benefits over traditional open gynecologic surgery, including shorter hospital stay and faster recovery.
Conditions We Treat with Gynecologic Robotic Surgery
Gynecologic robotic surgery may be used to treat the following gynecological conditions more effectively:
- Cervical cancer – Cervical cancer is a disorder that can be caused by long-lasting infection with certain types of human papillomavirus (HPV). Symptoms may include vaginal bleeding or abnormal discharge.
- Uterine cancer – Uterine cancer occurs when cells in the uterus continue to grow out of control. Women who have gone through menopause are more at risk of contracting uterine cancer. Symptoms include abnormal vaginal bleeding, pain or pressure in the pelvis, among others.
- Uterine fibroids – Uterine fibroids are characterized by heavy or painful periods or bleeding between periods, feeling full in the lower abdomen, frequent urination, pain during sex, lower back pain and reproductive problems, such as infertility, multiple miscarriages or early labor.
- Endometriosis – Endometriosis is a condition that occurs when the tissue that normally lines the uterus, also called the endometrium, grows outside of the uterus, often on the ovaries, behind the uterus, on the bowels or the bladder.
- Uterine prolapse – Uterine prolapse occurs when the womb drops down due to weakening pelvic floor muscles and presses into the vaginal area.
- Menorrhagia – Menorrhagia is heavy menstrual bleeding that lasts for more than a week. If left untreated, this condition may cause anemia. Possible causes include hormone-related problems.
